      Hey,

Discovering something new is exciting and that’s often what the goal of scientific research is – achieving that ‘Eureka’ moment. Along the way are lots of puzzles and problems to solve and it always feels good when you finally arrive at a solution.

      Hi
The best thing is not knowing what the answer will be. Often you’re doing experiments that no-one else has done so you don’t know what’s going to happen. It really exciting when your experiments help you to understand a bit more about how things work.

So for my branch of science (medicine) the best thing is helping find the best treatments for people who are ill.

Also in my job everyday is different as my topic (evidence based medicine/epidemiology) covers quite a range of activities from doing my own research studies – I recently completed a study looking at mobile phones and bluetooth technology for monitoring peoples blood pressure in their own homes – to teaching medical students and doctors/nurses/vets (you name it!) about how to understand scientific evidence so that they can help their patients make the best decisions for their healthcare.

I also work with a great bunch of people also interested in the same thing and in particular I have a colleague who I share most my ideas with. This is really important as we can both help each other with our ideas. A lot of the best discoveries and theories in science have come from partnerships between scientists – I hope that will be the same for me!
