Radiation is basically when an atom gives out some energy or little particles. It can be dangerous because when the energy or the particles hit your body, they can damage it.
There are 4 basic types of radiation – alpha (which is a relatively heavy particle and is blocked by your skin), beta (which is a smaller particle and can pass into your body), gamma (which is pure energy and can go through almost anything) and neutron (which is somewhere between an alpha and beta particle in weight and can go straight through you).
      Hope that helps!
