      Hey,

The answer might seem surprising, but water hasn’t always been on Earth. During the early stages of the solar system, Earth would have been very hot and dry – any water would have evapourated into space.
We think that all the water came from special types of meteorites that crashed into Earth after it was born. Clumps of ice trapped in these meteorites would have melted on Earth, forming the oceans.
