All information for a person, animal, plant, etc is stored in their genetic material, their DNA (for some viruses RNA). It consists of 4 different building blocks. Combined in different ways you get the genetic code. You need specific combinations to encode for specific functions. Changes in the code may lead to changes in the function. A mutation is such a change, it means a change in the building blocks: exchanging one for another.
